It was exactly fourtcen days later that the Biot called for the first time upon the now experienced intergalactic pilots.  There was a knock at the door of their private rooms and Pinball yelled "Come in."  The door swung open and the vast mechanical android filled the frame.  He was forced to stoop to get inside the room and it crossed briefly through Vandal's mind that perhaps he doubled as an assassin and the people running this joint had finally decided to get rid of their fledgings.  Stupid and irrational sure, but such things flickered through Vandal's brain like the pages of a book in the wind.

"Today we meet the Evangelist."  Said the Biot, simply, stridently.  Vandal relaxed and then tensed... the Evangelist.  It sounded a bit like today we meet Jesus Christ... who knows.

"Where does he hang out?" Pinball asked.

"He lives a long way from here.  You will be putting the TKD 446 to its proper use now, a long fast trip, come, bring all your possessions, you will not return here for some while."

They followed their leader.

The couple of bags they had between them were bundled into a small hatch and they climbed aboard the great space launch on the antigrav of the Biot.  Much to Vandal's relief the robot boarded the craft with them.  He had wondered for a moment whether this might be their first maiden flight, and their last.

"This will be the last time I shall fly with you.  Once we reach the 'Cathedral of the Universe' you will be working directly with the Evangelist, alone."

"Gulp."  Pinball said.

"Where is the Cathedral of the Universe?"  Vandal asked.

"It occupies a system within the Andromeda Galaxy."

"A whole system?"

"Eight planets and a false moon."

"What's the false moon for?"

"Administration computers, come, no further questions, all will be revealed to you once we arrive."  And the rest of the journey was mostly silent.  Three days of hyper-travel.

The inside of the Gaussi was big, far bigger than its outside betrayed.  There were two sleeping quarters, generously built cabins and a central common room where it was possible to eat and spend time lazily.  Only one pilot was needed on duty during any part of the journey and very often the craft would fly on automatic and give warning if manual aid was required.  The Biot refused to take on any of the piloting, working like a good teacher with his pupils.  The task for Pinball and Vandal was not, however, a tough one for the training had been thorough and the machine flew with incredible precision and ease.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
